No, Blending in With The World Isn’t Okay

Jesus said: “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:13-16 (NKJV)

I recently read an article where the author was saying it’s okay for born-again Christians to do the things the world does: get drunk, swear, and to forget about modesty.  He said that God’s grace would cover any sin and that God understands that we’re just humans who have no control over our behavior.

What the author failed to understand is that the Lord commands that we separate ourselves from the unbelieving world; not physically, but spiritually.  Jesus, in speaking to His church, said that we are to be a light to this sinful world so that others can come to know the true Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

The Bible tells us in Ephesians 5:8-14 that before we were saved we walked in darkness.  After we accept Jesus as our Savior and repent of our sins, we are to walk as “children of light” and not to have “fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness.”

Being Christian is not easy and sometimes it’s tempting to “go with the flow” of this world. If we truly want a close relationship with God we must turn away from anything that will dishonor Him.  God is completely holy and cannot be close to sin or our sinful behavior. God’s grace comes in to our lives when we truly need His help to stop our sinful behavior.

After readying the article, what was equally sad to see were the comments from people saying they were so glad that they don’t have to change their sinful ways. That they had been struggling with guilt over [insert sinful behavior] but that now see that God’s grace would cover their sins without them having to change their lives.

Well, I’m here to tell you that God does expect us to change our lives to honor Him. We are not perfect and will sin, but the point is to repent and not dwell in sinful behavior.

If you are currently living a life that is not honoring to God, today is a day for a better life: FULLY COMMIT your lives to the Lord by turning away from your sin. Make a decision to create a beautiful life that will shine a light in this dark world.

Unlike the author of the article, I believe we are not mindless sinners. I believe we each make choices everyday that either bring us closer or takes us away from God.
