An Abundant Life – Today’s Thanksgiving Message
“I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” – Jesus
Happy Thanksgiving! As you celebrate this day in America, you’re probably on a hectic schedule: cooking, cleaning, visiting with family and friends. I heard on the news today that travel during Thanksgiving is the busiest time of the whole year!
So with that in mind I think it’s important to find a few moments in all our busy-ness to stop and reflect on the Lord and all the blessings He’s given us.
The Apostle Paul said that we ought to “Pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” (1 Thessalonians 5:17-18)
In James 1:17 we read, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights…”
As our main verse reads, Jesus tells us that He came to us that we may have an abundant life. That abundance comes from God directly. What does Jesus mean by abundance? Can it be financial abundance? An abundance of friends? What about an abundance of health? I think it can mean all or none of those things! You see, the Lord can indeed supply all of the above blessings. Jesus said “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”
However, you may not be feeling very blessed and may think you have nothing to be thankful for. But don’t despair if your bank account is almost empty or your body is sick and aching! The abundant life Jesus promises to all His followers is the one where He can bring peace, contentment, and joy–even if our life is met with these worldly challenges. The key to obtaining this abundance is putting our trust completely in our powerful Savior and seeking “first the kingdom of God”.
So, as you gather with friends and family this holiday, remember to pray a prayer of thanksgiving to the Provider of an abundant life.
